Watch news : Seiko revives the “Alpinist” collection

the Seiko Alpinist It is one of the essential elements of the Japanese brand. Renamed the “Japanese Explorer”, this watch has won the hearts of watch lovers. It is a robust, aesthetic, versatile and affordable watch. Its dimensions make it an ideal model for most dolls and if it had only one watch, the Alpinist would be a good candidate. Given the success of the previous edition launched in 2006 and whose production now stops, Seiko has decided to reissue its watch in 4 versions by early 2020.

The 4 newcomers take the main aesthetic codes of the previous Mountaineer. However, Seiko has chosen to improve certain points and offer new finishes. Therefore, the Alpinist 2020 will be available in 4 versions: cream dial, champagne dial, green dial and black lacquered dial. We must highlight 3 major innovations. First, the change of movement: the previous generation embarked on a Seiko 6R15 movement while this new edition works with 6R35 caliber whose main improvement lies in a power reserve that increases to 70 hours ! Then, the date window is surpassed by a cyclops to improve readability and we find the Prospex logo at 6 o’clock. Lately, the bottom of the box is now transparent.

On the side of the case, we find the main characteristics of the SARB017, the 2006 Alpinist. Therefore, the case is made of stainless steel and alternates between the polished finishes on the bezel, the edges and most of the middle, then the brushed finishes on the top of the horns. In terms of dimensions, this new edition remains true to the measurements of its older sister with a 39.5 mm case wide we also found the 2 crowns distinctive of this model: the first one is screwed and located at 3 o’clock, it allows you to set the time and date; the second at 4 o’clock adjusts the internal bidirectional bezel. The bottom of the box, once full, opens this time to reveal the movement of the clock. Despite this change, the seal remains the same, namely 20ATM. The set is topped by a flat sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment.

the SPB121 It is the original climber closest to the most popular with its green sphere of sunbeams, cathedral spiers and golden indexes. The white railway contrasts with the background and the cardinal points, as well as the indication of the red north in the internal telescope. the SPB117 It is undoubtedly the most innovative model of the 4 versions. Delivered in a steel bracelet, the watch has a black lacquered dial and “shark teeth” indexes. The cultivable numbers at 2, 4, 6, 8 and 12 o’clock that form the Mountaineer’s DNA also disappear, giving this model a more sporty feel. Finally, the other 2 versions called SPB119 Y SPB123 Sport respectively a sphere of creamy white champagne and sun rays. The first one benefits from a more sober color palette with its steel indexes applied, its matte dial and its black rail punctuated with orange. The second is more dressed with indexes and golden hands.

All these new climbers carry the caliber Seiko 6R35. It is a movement developed by the Japanese brand that oscillates in 21,600 A / h and that offers a comfortable power reserve of 70 hours. Enough to allow you to alternate with your other demolitions without having to re-arm it systematically. On the side of the bracelet, all watches are mounted in leather, with the exception of SPB117, which is delivered in a stainless steel bracelet with 3 links. The SPB121, SPB119 and SPB123 respectively have a brown crocodile strap, a black dome with white stitching and a green one with Italian stitching. In addition, the20 mm horn, which is the most standard, will allow you to change it as you wish.

Since the brand stopped producing the famous mountaineer Since 2006, fans ripped the remaining copies. Some watches have reached indecency at resale sites. If in 2019, Seiko launched a blue limited edition reserved for the US market, but this was not enough to meet the growing demand. This announcement of a new broadcast, therefore, sounds like great news for fans of the brand. However, the price is going up, now it shows an amount that goes from € 699 to € 749; An advertisement that is controversial as the presence of the Prospex logo on the dial. For our part, we find that this remains consistent in the light of the announced specifications, in particular the improvement of the movement that brings a remarkable new performance. For the rest, be the judge!
