Watch news : Who is Peter Speake-Marin? Watch interview and encounter

For connoisseurs and collectors of watches, the “Speake-Marin” brand is known for its watches of great complications produced in limited series. But who knows that this is really the last name of the famous English watchmaker Peter Speake-Marin?

I had the opportunity to meet him during the Seiko Matsuri 2019 event in Lyon. He gave me the honor of a brief interview during which he summed up his career in a few words to emphasize what was the main thread of his choices: the desire to communicate his passion and knowledge. watchmaking to a wide audience.

Here is a brief biography as an introduction to this interview.

Peter Speake-Marin The origins

Born in 1968 in England, Peter Neville Speake began his watchmaking training after graduating from high school. Graduated from Hackney Technical College in London, he completed his training at the WOSTEP foundation in Neuchâtel. It is a neutral and independent training center backed by members of the Swiss watch industry.

Back in England, he worked for Somlo Antiques in Piccadilly, where he was responsible for establishing the catering department. During this period, he worked on pieces created by the most important watchmaking names such as Breguet, Patek Philippe, etc. Thus discover the methods of design and manufacture of the best.

The development

His marriage to Daniela Marin completes his last name: it is under the name of Speake-Marin that both will continue their careers. Back in Switzerland, Peter worked for a few years at Renaud & Papi, to quickly establish his own workshop and develop his brand with his wife. For 15 years, they will chart their course independently in the very closed world of fine watchmaking. Here are two examples:

The Watch Ron Decorte Foundation

Launched in 2000, the “Foundation Watch” is a pocket watch equipped with a completely handmade tourbillon. This watch was the key that gave Peter access to the very select Independent Watchmaking Academy (AHCI) (photo credit Ron Decorte)

Speake-Marin Renaissance Minute Repeater Tourbillon

In 2012, Speake-Marin launched this Renaissance minute repeater – Tourbillon (Speake-Marin credit)

A new way

In 2016, Peter and Daniela sold the brand to devote themselves to a new educational project, the “The Naked Watchmaker” website. And always with this educational spirit, they have also created the STOIC brand that offers watches at very affordable prices, incorporating the aesthetic codes of iconic models such as the pilot watch.

You will learn more about these two projects in this interview.
